Snakes & Scales: A Reading by Johanna Wright

December 9, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

museum admission

On December 9, at 10 am and at 10:30 am, the Museum of Life and Science is proud to host Oregon-based author and illustrator Johanna Wright, as part of a presentation by museum staff about snakes.

Wright will read her children’s book called The Orchestra Pit, which tells the story of a snake that accidentally wanders out of its snake pit and into an orchestra pit, where it meets the different instruments. This event is free with admission to the museum.

This presentation is made possible by the Durham Medical Orchestra (DMO), led by Dr. Verena Mösenbichler-Bryant. The DMO commissioned local composer Dayton Kinney to transform the book into a musical composition for full orchestra and a narrator. In the new work, kids and adults are introduced to all of the instruments of the orchestra, just like they are in Sergei Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf.”

The Durham Medical Orchestra will perform the premiere of “The Orchestra Pit” on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, at 3 p.m. in Baldwin Auditorium at Duke University, with Wright narrating.

A limited quantity of books signed by the author will be available for purchase that day.
