A Musical Journey | Un Viaje Musical
April 1, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pmFree
The DMO will be hosting an educational interactive children’s concert in the spring of 2017, in collaboration with the Emily K Center in Durham, NC. The target audience of 150-300 or more participants includes families and Pioneer (elementary school) students served by the Emily K Center, students at Lakewood Elementary School in Durham, and families of DMO’s regular audience and musicians. The DMO worked with Duke’s Office of Durham and Regional Affairs to identify Lakewood Elementary as a school where students could particularly benefit from our program, since students in this underserved population do not have the benefit of a KidzNotes program in their school. In collaboration with the school principal and/or teachers, the DMO will invite all interested Lakewood students to participate in the concert.
The concert will be held in the gym of the Emily K Center. The program will include excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony with commentary and introduction to specific instruments woven in, rather than the standard “kids and orchestra” pieces. The concert will also feature a few additional shorter pieces, including a piece they can dance to (free expression) and one at the end of the concert when they will have an opportunity to take turns conducting the orchestra. The DMO conductor and members of Girl Scout troop 1158 (8th-10th graders) will teach the kids about the orchestra, the music, and the instruments while the musicians demonstrate. The Girl Scouts, acting as role models, will break the ice and encourage dancing and participation by the students.
The DMO will also produce and distribute printed concert “programs”, which will be generic (i.e. not concert-specific) educational booklets developed by the DMO artistic director and musician volunteers, with input from the Girl Scouts and/or an elementary school teacher. These will be distributed for the students to take home from the concert, with any remaining booklets donated to the elementary school.
The DMO gratefully acknowledges the support of the WCPE Education Fund for this event.
