On the program

Daylights, Hilary Purrington (b. 1990)

Daylights is a short piece about color, vision, and perception. It opens with a simple melody, sung out by a solo flute. Throughout the work, this versatile and memorable tune reappears in various guises. Read more about this piece and Hilary Purrington here.

Concerto in E flat Major, “Dumbarton Oaks”, Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971)

  1. Tempo giusto – L’istesso tempo
  2. Allegretto
  3. Con moto – Poco meno – Tempo I

Stravinsky’s Concerto in E flat Major for a chamber orchestra of 15 is a prime example of his notorious neoclassicism. Learn about the inspiration for this piece.

Symphony No. 1 in D Major, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)

  1. Langsam. Schleppend. (Slowly. Dragging.)
  2. Kräftig bewegt, doch nicht zu schnell. (Moving vigorously, but not too fast.)
  3. Feierlich und gemessen, ohne zu schleppen. (Solemn and measured, without dragging.)
  4. Stürmisch bewegt. (With stormy emotion.)

Mahler revised and reworked this epic symphony over a span of 15 years, and was said to have preferred not to have program notes or titles that would influence the audience’s listening. If you’d like to read about the many works he incorporated, and what unnerved early audiences, click here.
