In furtherance of DMO’s mission to unite the local community, we are thrilled to extend an invitation to all eligible passionate musicians located in the Triangle and surrounding communities to participate in the 2024/2025 DMO Concerto Competition!

IMPORTANT DATES

The competition will take place in two rounds:

Round 1: Video Submission

Sunday, October 13, 2024
Application form, including video link, must be time marked no later than 5:00 PM eastern time.

Round 2: Final Round – Live Audition

Sunday, November 10, 2024, 1:00PM – 3:30PM eastern time in the Nelson Music Room on Duke’s East Campus

Candidates will receive notification of advancement to the final round no later than October 23, 2024. If invited to participate in the final round, candidates must be available for the live audition.

The performance with the DMO will occur on May 4, 2025 at 3:00PM in Duke’s Baldwin Auditorium.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

You must satisfy at least ONE of these categories:

  • Adult musicians ages 30 and over; or
  • Currently active members of the DMO, regardless of age or profession; or
  • Eligible Students training to become Medical Professionals
    • “Eligible Students” is defined as an individual who is at least 21 years old and currently enrolled in either (i) an undergraduate program with a focus on fulfilling prerequisites towards graduate work as a Medical Professional, or (ii) a graduate or professional degree granting program for Medical Professionals.
    • “Medical Professionals” includes anyone associated with the medical field, including, but not limited to, doctors, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, medical technicians, researchers, and educators
    • We strongly encourage active and retired Medical Professionals to participate.

THE JUDGING PANEL

The judging panel will consist of distinguished professionals within the local musical community, ensuring a fair and insightful evaluation of each performance. The winner(s) of the competition will be able to perform a movement or whole concerto (decided by the jury) with the DMO as part of its May 2025 concert.

REQUIREMENTS

  • The entire solo work(s) must be 30 minutes or less. Proposed repertoire must be written with orchestral accompaniment.
  • Depending on the length of the proposed repertoire, multiple pieces may be entered (for example, if entering as a vocalist, multiple arias may be prepared).
  • Music must be available through IMSLP, rental, or by purchase.
  • Soloist(s) must be available for rehearsals with the DMO during the spring semester of 2025. The DMO rehearses on Sunday evenings on Duke’s East Campus and will hold several dress rehearsals the week before the May performance. The actual rehearsal schedule will be finalized with the artistic director upon finalization of results.

VIDEO GUIDELINES

  • Musicians must submit a video of the piece that they would like to perform with the DMO.
  • Videos must be unedited and must be no more than six months old.
  • Accompanists are not required for the video submission. You may provide your own piano accompanist for the final in-person round.
  • The video must be uploaded to YouTube and a link must be submitted as part of your application. Make sure to set the setting as public or unlisted.
  • An Application Form with your information must be submitted with the video link.
  • Make sure that your submitted competition materials are complete, accessible, and playable.

PAYMENT DETAILS

  • All applicants must submit a non-refundable application fee of $50.
  • Payment may be made in the following manner:
    • By check, payable to the “DMO Foundation.” All checks must be mailed to the following address and must be postmarked no later than October 13, 2024.

  • Payment of the application fee is waived for current DMO members and Eligible Students.
  • Exceptions to the application fee due to financial hardship will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants may be disqualified from participation if the Application Form, including video link, and application fee are not received by the required submission date. Videos must be submitted simultaneously with the application. Applicants should be prepared to perform all movements of the proposed repertoire, but the judging panel may choose to hear only a portion of the piece. The DMO reserves the right to choose multiple winners or no winners depending on the quality of the applicant pool. No monetary award or other financial compensation will be offered if selected as a winner. All rights to any resulting performance will be retained by the DMO. The DMO encourages all eligible participants to participate.
